Germany’s New €65 Night Train Puts Privacy First

Germany is getting a new overnight train connecting Hamburg and Munich, but its sleeping accommodation is not quite what early publicity suggested. Nox Mobility will initially offer private, airline-style suites with seats that unfold for the night, rather than the full bedrooms shown in its original plans. The service adds another rail option for overnight journeys between two of Germany’s biggest cities.

Each Nox Suite has a large seat, table, luggage space and power sockets. At night, the seat moves into a lounge position, giving passengers two metres to stretch out beside the window. There will be no restaurant carriage; meals can be pre-ordered for delivery, with breakfast offered separately. Larger private Nox Rooms for one or two people are planned from 2029, not at launch.
The service also stops in Bremen and Augsburg, adding overnight options beyond the two main cities. Bremen has the narrow streets of the Schnoor quarter, while Augsburg’s Fuggerei is one of Germany’s best-known historic housing complexes. Morning arrivals leave time to explore Munich’s museums or Hamburg’s waterfront before hotel check-in. Passengers using intermediate stops should check boarding and alighting conditions when booking.
Anyone travelling as a couple should budget for two suites, since Nox’s double rooms are not due at launch. Nor is the lowest advertised fare guaranteed on every departure. Deutsche Bahn’s new Hamburg–Munich ICE Sprinters will take about five hours and 20 minutes, and Nightjet also serves the route overnight. Compare ticket conditions and accommodation types before paying, especially when plans may change.
