Italy Faces Flight and Rail Disruption in 30 October Strike

Flights across Italy could face disruption on Friday, 30 October 2026, during a nationwide strike called by the USB union across public and private sectors. The action concerns pay, living costs and government policy. Naples Airport has warned that delays or cancellations are possible, although none has been confirmed for specific flights. Although Italian aviation rules prohibit strikes from 30 October to 5 November, USB has confirmed that transport workers remain included in its planned action. The extent of any flight disruption remains uncertain.

Italy Strike Timings and What Passengers Should Check

• General strike: Friday 30 October, 00:01–23:59.
• Rail strike: Thursday 29 October, 21:00, until Friday 30 October, 20:59.
• Normally protected flight periods: 07:00–10:00 and 18:00–21:00.
• Guaranteed regional train periods: 06:00–09:00 and 18:00–21:00 on 30 October; only designated services are guaranteed.
• Before departure: Confirm flight status and any refund or rebooking options with the airline.

Naples Airport has advised passengers to contact their airline, travel agent or tour operator about possible disruption. Italy's transport ministry also lists separate industrial action involving airport and ground-handling workers at Pisa and Florence. However, warnings do not mean every airport or flight will be affected. If your journey includes a connection, check each service separately, especially when travelling on different tickets.

Although aviation strikes are prohibited in Italy from 30 October to 5 November, USB still plans to include air transport, leaving the impact on flights uncertain. Separately, a nationwide rail strike may disrupt trains from 21:00 on 29 October until 20:59 on 30 October. Trenitalia allows refunds for affected Frecce and Intercity tickets until departure, while regional ticket refund requests must be made by the end of 28 October.

If a flight covered by EU passenger-rights rules is cancelled, passengers can choose a refund or rerouting and may qualify for meals or accommodation while waiting. Compensation depends on the cause of disruption. Strikes by airline staff do not normally qualify as extraordinary circumstances, while airport or air traffic control strikes may do so. Refund and rerouting rights still apply to eligible cancelled flights.
