Bird Strike Turns easyJet Flight Into Coach Journey

A routine flight to Southampton took an unexpected turn on 18 October when an easyJet aircraft struck a bird shortly after leaving Glasgow. Flight EZY415 declared an emergency and diverted to Liverpool, leaving passengers far short of their intended destination. What followed was an unexpected change of transport plans, with passengers facing a longer journey and questions about who would cover any additional costs.

The Airbus A319 transmitted emergency code 7700 over Lancashire before landing safely at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. easyJet’s tracker records departure from Glasgow at 09:09, instead of 08:05, and arrival in Liverpool at 10:14. The airline initially considered a replacement aircraft but later arranged coaches to Southampton. Passengers were instructed to collect their checked bags and wait for onward transport.

The diversion followed a bird strike after take-off; easyJet did not publicly specify the damage. The UK Civil Aviation Authority considers bird strikes a possible extraordinary circumstance, so fixed compensation for a long delay is not guaranteed. However, this does not remove the airline’s obligation to provide appropriate care. For this short flight, food and refreshments become relevant once a qualifying delay reaches two hours.
