France Protests Bring Curfews to Paris Tourist Areas

Visitors in Paris faced overnight movement restrictions on 19 October after protests across France turned violent over the weekend. Police imposed a curfew in small parts of Place de la République and Les Halles, while the Louvre remained closed after students blocked its entrances. More than 2,400 arrests were reported nationwide. Anyone sightseeing or staying nearby now needs to distinguish restricted streets from the surrounding neighbourhoods.
The unrest intensified on Saturday, 17 October, as hundreds of thousands demonstrated over living costs and public services. Some protests escalated into clashes, looting and fires, including a blaze that devastated Limoges town hall. Police responded in several cities, and the French government called for targeted measures on Monday. At the Louvre, students staged a separate blockade in support of the wider school protest movement.
In Paris, the curfew runs from 23:00 on 19 October until 06:00 on 20 October. It applies to the central section of Place de la République and specified streets south of Les Halles, not entire districts. Residents who can prove their address and certain workers are exempt. Separate bans on gatherings begin at 20:00 in designated areas. The UK Foreign Office has not advised against travel to France.
Where France’s Protests May Affect Your Trip
- Paris curfew: 23:00–06:00, restricted sections of République and Les Halles only.
- Hotel access: Ask reception about the exact perimeter and proof of accommodation.
- Louvre: Closed on 19 October; ticket holders can request a refund through the museum’s official form.
- Public transport: Check RATP for station closures and route changes.
- Other cities: Restrictions vary; check local prefecture announcements.
- Refunds: Other bookings depend on provider terms and actual disruption.
- Emergency: Call 112.
Instead of cancelling a Paris break solely because demonstrations occurred, identify what has actually been affected: entry to a museum, the route to a hotel or a booked journey. Keep written confirmation of closures and ask each provider about alternatives before paying for replacements. Restrictions can change overnight, so check local police instructions and transport updates again before heading out, particularly for evening plans.
