Suffolk Rail Works Force Nine Days of Bus Transfers

Greater Anglia passengers travelling between Ipswich and Lowestoft face nine days of replacement buses as engineering work closes sections of the East Suffolk line during the October half-term. The disruption runs from Saturday 24 October to Sunday 1 November 2026, with the affected stretch changing after the first weekend. Network Rail is rebuilding Saxmundham junction to prepare for construction freight serving Sizewell C.
How to Travel During the Suffolk Rail Closure
- 24–25 October: Buses replace all Ipswich–Lowestoft trains; Beccles passengers change at Halesworth for a separate shuttle.
- 26 October–1 November: Trains run between Lowestoft and Halesworth; buses cover Halesworth–Ipswich.
- Before departure: Check Greater Anglia service alterations for your travel date and connections.
- Bus boarding: Find your station’s replacement stop before leaving.
- Tickets: Bring a valid rail ticket; replacement buses cost nothing extra.
The first weekend affects the entire Ipswich–Lowestoft rail journey, including connections at stations such as Woodbridge and Saxmundham. Beccles is a particular exception: its replacement shuttle links with other buses at Halesworth, so passengers cannot remain on the same vehicle throughout. From Monday, trains resume north of Halesworth, meaning journeys towards Ipswich involve a bus connection rather than an uninterrupted train trip.
Greater Anglia says a valid train ticket is required on replacement buses, but there is no additional fare. Travellers can take up to three pieces of luggage, including one large item and two smaller ones, within the operator’s limits. Assistance remains available for passengers with reduced mobility, although accessible taxis may sometimes be arranged instead. Replacement stops can be away from station entrances, so check the boarding point.
Passengers connecting at Ipswich with trains to London or Norwich should check the amended timetable, as replacement bus timings differ from normal rail services. Those using separately booked tickets should pay particular attention to onward connections. Rail services between Lowestoft and Halesworth resume on 26 October, but buses continue between Halesworth and Ipswich until 1 November. Full-size bicycles cannot be taken on replacement buses.
