Holiday weather across southern Europe is shifting again, with the most serious risks now coming from wildfires near Bordeaux, thunderstorms along Croatia’s Adriatic coast and renewed heat around Lisbon. Sicily is facing rising temperatures and high fire danger rather than an island-wide storm warning.

Where the Main Alerts Are

  • France: Wildfires remain active in Gironde, around 15 kilometres from Bordeaux, with nearby evacuations
  • Portugal: Lisbon has a yellow heat warning for 27–28 July
  • Italy: Sicily faces rising temperatures and high fire danger in Palermo and Trapani
  • Croatia: Orange thunderstorm warnings cover Knin, Rijeka and Split, with strong Adriatic winds
  • Spain: The 44C alert has expired; storms now affect parts of the Balearics, Catalonia and Murcia, while southern temperatures rise again

France remains the main concern, with active wildfires in Gironde prompting evacuations near Bordeaux. Lisbon is under a yellow heat warning for 27 and 28 July, while Sicily is preparing for rising temperatures and high fire danger around Palermo and Trapani. Croatia faces a different threat, as orange thunderstorm warnings and strong Adriatic winds may disrupt travel around Knin, Rijeka and Split.

The latest alerts could affect beach days, boat trips, hiking routes and outdoor attractions. Evacuation orders may disrupt visits around Bordeaux and nearby coastal areas, while severe storms and strong winds could interrupt ferries or excursions near Split and Rijeka. In Sicily, visitors should check local fire-risk updates before driving through rural or wooded areas, particularly around Palermo and Trapani.

Conditions differ sharply between countries and even neighbouring resorts, so one broad forecast for southern Europe is not enough. Travellers should check official regional warnings each morning, follow evacuation instructions and confirm ferries, parks and outdoor tours before leaving their accommodation. Weather alerts can change within hours, making the latest local update more useful than a forecast checked several days before departure.
