Star Wars Fans Get a New George Lucas Museum
The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art will open in Los Angeles on 22 September, ending years of delays for George Lucas and Mellody Hobson’s long-planned project. Set in Exposition Park, the 300,000-square-foot museum is not simply a Star Wars showcase: its opening displays mix film props and costumes with comics, illustration, photography, paintings and murals, giving visitors a much broader look at visual storytelling.
More than 1,200 objects will be shown across over 30 galleries at opening. The Star Wars in Motion exhibition includes vehicle designs, props, costumes and artwork from the first six films, including Luke’s Landspeeder and General Grievous’s Wheel Bike. Elsewhere, the collection ranges from Frida Kahlo and Vincent van Gogh to Norman Rockwell, Banksy, comic art and material from the wider Lucasfilm archive.

The museum sits inside Exposition Park, so it can be paired with several major Los Angeles attractions without crossing the city. The Natural History Museum, California Science Center, California African American Museum, LA Memorial Coliseum and Exposition Park Rose Garden are all nearby, while USC is across the street. The closest rail stop is Expo/Vermont, making the area straightforward to reach without a car.
This will appeal most to film, comics and illustration fans rather than visitors expecting a conventional Star Wars attraction. Families get a good deal because admission is free for under-18s, but everyone still needs a timed ticket. The museum’s park, gardens, café, shop and Skywalker Grill can be visited without museum admission, which also gives people something to do if their gallery slot is later in the day.
