Starting Monday, July 15, significant reconstruction work on Shiphay Lane in Torquay will impact travelers visiting the area. The 10-week project will result in part of Shiphay Lane being closed to all vehicles, potentially causing travel inconveniences.

The reconstruction will take place between Oak Park Avenue and the junction with Shiphay Avenue, divided into two five-week phases. The first phase will cover Oak Park Close to Shiphay Avenue, followed by Oak Park Close to Oak Park Avenue.

Travelers should be aware that Shiphay Lane will be under a 24-hour closure between Dairy Hill and the junction with Shiphay Avenue. This closure is necessary for the safety of road users and the workers.

Notices have been sent to affected residents and businesses, but visitors to Torquay may not be aware of the disruption. A signed diversion route will direct vehicles along Shiphay Avenue, Marldon Road, Dart Avenue, and Exe Hill onto Shiphay Lane, with the reverse route for the opposite direction.

While pedestrian access along Shiphay Lane will remain open, the road closure could lead to delays and detours for travelers. The work aims to be completed over the school summer holidays to minimize disruption, but it still poses challenges for those traveling through the area.

The reconstruction involves digging down 425mm (17 inches), removing the current road material, and rebuilding the road with two or three layers of surfacing. Despite the road closure, waste and recycling collections will proceed as usual for local residents.

Travelers are advised to plan extra time for their journeys or consider alternative routes to avoid Shiphay Lane during the construction period. The project, managed by Torbay Council and carried out by SWISCo and Cormac Contracting Ltd, follows last year’s roadwork on Shiphay Lane between Devon Dumpling and Oak Park Avenue.
