Air New Zealand Launches First Seasonal Direct Flights Between Christchurch and Adelaide

Air New Zealand will launch a new direct route between Christchurch in New Zealand’s South Island and Adelaide in South Australia from 27 October 2025. The seasonal connection will operate twice a week on Mondays and Fridays through to 27 March 2026. The flights will be serviced by narrowbody Airbus aircraft and will offer approximately 15,000 seats throughout the season. One-way fares will start at 340 New Zealand dollars, according to the airline’s official announcement.

This will be the first nonstop air connection between the two regional capitals, removing the need to transfer through larger airports such as Auckland, Melbourne or Sydney. The new route aims to improve convenience for trans-Tasman travellers by providing a more direct option between smaller urban centres. It also points to a shift in travel habits, with more people choosing routes that skip busy hubs and cut down total travel time.

Christchurch-based passengers will now have easier access to major South Australian destinations. Adelaide Central Market has been around since 1869, and it’s still the place to go for fresh produce and food from all over the world. In the hills northeast of Adelaide, the Barossa Valley blends small-town charm with some of Australia’s best-known wineries, including Penfolds and Jacob’s Creek. Kangaroo Island, accessible via ferry from Cape Jervis, offers nature reserves, coastal cliffs and native wildlife including sea lions and koalas.

In the reverse direction, Australians flying from Adelaide will be able to reach several key sites on New Zealand’s South Island. Queenstown, perched by Lake Wakatipu, offers everything from skiing and hiking to laid-back cruises on the lake. Fiordland National Park is home to remote fjords like Milford Sound, a well-known spot for boat tours and hiking. Akaroa, a historic village on Banks Peninsula near Christchurch, is famous for its French colonial history and harbour cruises where visitors can see dolphins and penguins.

This connection is part of a broader strategy by regional airlines to strengthen point-to-point travel across Australasia. By linking Christchurch and Adelaide directly, the route provides new options for both tourism and business and supports regional economies on both sides of the Tasman. As more people look for quicker and simpler ways to get around, direct flights between smaller cities are gaining ground.
