JetBlue to Grant Free Carry-On with Basic Economy Fares Starting This September

Starting September 6th, passengers flying on JetBlue’s Blue Basic fare will be allowed to bring one carry-on bag on board. This change comes as the airline reverses its 2021 decision to cut carry-on bags from its basic economy fare. The policy update aligns JetBlue with American and Delta, who already offer carry-on bags with their basic fares.

JetBlue’s decision is part of its broader strategy to stay competitive in the market. Marty St. George, JetBlue’s recently returned president, emphasized the importance of this change in meeting customer preferences.

"Carry-on bags are an important part of travel to customers, and when presented with a choice between JetBlue’s award-winning service and another carrier’s basic offering, we want JetBlue to be the easy winner," St. George stated.

Passengers flying with the Blue Basic fare should note that they will be the last to board, and overhead bin space may be limited. For those looking to board earlier or have advanced seat selection, JetBlue’s Blue fare offers these perks along with no cancellation or change fees.

Three years ago, JetBlue removed carry-on bags from its Blue Basic fare to differentiate it from other fare types. However, the airline has recognized the value of offering carry-ons and has adjusted its policy accordingly.

This policy change follows a series of strategic moves by JetBlue. Recently, the airline has undergone a CEO change and brought back Marty St. George as president. It also announced plans to phase out its Embraer E190 and E195 aircraft, replacing them with the Airbus A220. JetBlue plans to operate a fleet of 100 A220s by 2025.

These developments come in the wake of a court ruling that blocked JetBlue’s acquisition of Spirit Airlines. Despite this setback, JetBlue is focusing on expansion and improving its offerings to maintain a competitive edge in the airline industry.
