Gatwick Strike Could Disrupt Flights for Nine Days

More than 220 assisted-travel workers at London Gatwick are set to strike over pay later this month, raising the risk of slower boarding, disembarkation and wider flight delays. Unite members employed by contractor Wilson James plan walkouts on 17–21 September and 23–26 September. The union says both short- and long-haul services could be affected if the dispute is not resolved before the first strike.

What to Do If You Need Assistance

• Book assistance through your airline or travel agent at least 48 hours before departure.
• Keep written confirmation of the request.
• Allow extra time at Gatwick on strike dates.
• If you use a wheelchair, mobility aid, medical equipment or an assistance dog, confirm arrangements with the airline in advance.

Gatwick’s Assisted Travel service can cover check-in, movement through the terminal, security, boarding and assistance after landing, so staffing disruption could affect several stages of the journey. Passengers arriving without a booking can still request help, but Gatwick warns that late requests may involve delays and, in some circumstances, passengers may be unable to travel if required arrangements have not been made in advance.

Passengers with disabilities or reduced mobility are legally entitled to assisted travel free of charge when flying from a UK airport. The right also covers people with some hidden disabilities, including autism and dementia. Gatwick has Assisted Travel reception points and help points across both terminals, while passengers bringing medical equipment or an assistance dog should notify their airline at least 48 hours before departure.

Unite has not named particular airlines or routes expected to be affected. Its warning centres on delays caused by slower boarding and disembarkation rather than a confirmed programme of flight cancellations. Anyone travelling on the strike dates should therefore keep their booking unless their airline says otherwise, monitor flight updates and leave additional time at the airport, especially when assisted travel has been arranged.
