American Airlines Adds Gift Cards As New AAdvantage Redemption Option

American Airlines has expanded its AAdvantage loyalty programme with a new option that allows members to redeem miles for gift cards from well-known brands. The airline has launched the AAdvantage gift cards platform, which offers cards across retail, dining and entertainment categories. Values range between $10 and $500. Members can exchange miles directly through the dedicated website, creating another way to use loyalty balances.
The new platform features gift cards from brands such as Sephora, Nike and Best Buy. According to American Airlines, the initiative responds to growing demand for more flexible redemption options within the programme. Members are now able to convert their miles into everyday spending, rather than saving them only for flights or upgrades, expanding how the loyalty currency can be used.
“The AAdvantage® program offers customers more value for their miles than any other U.S. airline, and our members are looking for more flexibility in how they redeem them. By expanding our portfolio of member offerings and adding new ways to use miles, such as gift cards, we’re making it easier for customers to engage with the program and experience the full value of AAdvantage®."
Existing ways to redeem AAdvantage miles
- Flights and cabin upgrades
- AAdvantage Hotels and AAdvantage Cars bookings
- American Airlines Vacations packages
- In-flight purchases such as food and drinks
- Experiences through Mastercard Priceless
- Cruise bookings through AAdvantage Cruises
These options remain available while the new gift card platform expands everyday redemption choices.
Although the new feature focuses on retail rewards, the programme still centres on travel. Miles can still be used for flights, hotels, car hire and holiday packages, which remain the main value of most airline loyalty programmes. Gift cards add another option for members who prefer smaller rewards or who want to spend their miles without organising a trip right away.
The change reflects how airline loyalty schemes are gradually adding everyday rewards alongside travel benefits. More redemption options make it easier for members to use their miles instead of leaving them unused in their accounts for long periods. With gift cards now included, AAdvantage members have additional ways to turn their accumulated miles into something practical.
