AirAsia Halts Flights in Response to Mount Ruang Eruption

In the wake of Mount Ruang's recent eruption in Indonesia's Sulawesi Islands, AirAsia has announced the cancellation of flights to and from East Malaysia. The volcanic eruption, which occurred earlier this week, has spewed a significant ash cloud, disrupting air travel by reducing visibility and posing a severe risk to flight safety.

Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) issued Safety Information 09/2024 as a direct response to the eruption, outlining the hazardous conditions and recommending the suspension of flights in the affected regions. As a result, AirAsia has ceased operations to multiple destinations to ensure passenger and crew safety.

The affected routes include flights to and from Kota Kinabalu, Tawau, Sandakan, Labuan, Miri, Sibu, Bintulu, Kuching, and Brunei. The cancellations are effective from 10:00 AM on April 18, 2024, until 8:00 AM the following day, impacting thousands of travelers.

AirAsia's Group CEO, Bo Lingam, expressed regret over the inconvenience caused but emphasized the airline's commitment to safety. "The safety of our guests and crew is paramount," Lingam stated. He assured that the airline is closely monitoring the situation and working with CAAM to determine when it is safe to resume flights.

For affected passengers, AirAsia is offering several options. Travelers can rebook their flights without additional charges within 30 days of their original departure date or opt for credit in their AirAsia Rewards accounts, valid for two years.
