Air India has become the latest airline to offer premium economy products on its narrowbody fleet. The carrier has introduced a three-class configuration on its Airbus A320neo aircraft, including a new premium economy section, aiming to enhance the passenger experience.

Improving the Passenger Experience

Airlines periodically update their onboard products to improve passenger comfort and keep up with the latest industry standards. Recently, Air India has made significant investments in its fleet, particularly its narrowbody aircraft. Following the introduction of new Airbus A350s into its fleet last year, Air India has now unveiled a three-cabin configuration on two retrofitted A320neos and plans to retrofit all A320neos over the next year.

The new configuration includes 24 premium economy seats, each offering a 32-inch seat pitch, a four-inch recline, a portable electronic device (PED) holder, and a USB charging port. Campbell Wilson, Air India's CEO and Managing Director, stated that the upgrades are part of a broader effort to transform Air India into a world-class airline.

"The upgrade of the narrowbody fleet, which operates on domestic and short-haul international network, complements the upgraded widebody experience now available on our A350 fleet and new B777s, and on all other widebodies as they are refitted over the next two years," said Wilson.

New Features and Configuration

The new A320neo configuration will feature 164 seats, divided into eight in Business, 24 in Premium Economy, and 132 in Economy, all manufactured by Collins Aerospace. Enhancements include cabin mood lighting, wider seat pitches, PED holders, and USB ports. The Business class cabin offers a 40-inch pitch and seven-inch recline, with additional adjustable armrests, footrests, and backrests. Economy seats have a pitch of 28-29 inches and a four-inch recline, similar to Premium Economy.

Air India’s Current Fleet and Future Plans

Air India currently operates 46 Airbus A320neos and four A321neos. The airline's recent massive order of 470 aircraft from Boeing and Airbus includes 210 planes from the A320neo family. This order comprises 125 A320neos and 150 A321neos, including one Long Range (LR) variant.

The airline also maintains some first-generation Airbus narrowbodies in its fleet, including 10 A319s, nine A320s, and 13 A321s. With 142 aircraft currently in its fleet and another 478 on order, Air India is poised for significant growth. This expansion reflects the rapid growth of the Indian aviation market, which Boeing India President Salil Gupte described as the fastest-growing market worldwide.
