Every day there are almost 200,000 flights around the world that take passengers from one point to another. Each flight has an original number that allows it to be tracked. The flight number is supposed to help the passenger to better navigate before the flight, but nevertheless passengers often have difficulties with where to look for the flight number and not to confuse it with other data specified in the air ticket. We will tell you how and where to find the flight number and how it can help a traveler.

What is a flight number?

Since thousands of airplanes part the skies every day, it was logical to have a tool that would make it possible to identify them. Thus the flight number took the form of a sequence number.

The flight number is in most cases a combination of 6-7 digits and letters that can be found on the boarding pass. At the beginning of each flight number is usually the IATA code. It also consists of a set of numbers and letters and is unique to the airline that operates the airplane.

The flight number is convenient for both sides of the flight. It helps passengers to better navigate during check-in at the airport, as well as to track their flight at major airports. For example, there are up to a hundred flights departing from Frankfurt Airport within an hour. Navigating a busy airport can be stressful even for experienced passengers, and what can we say about those who are traveling by air for the first time. A flight number allows a passenger to track his or her flight on airport displays to find the right gate faster. But it is also useful to the passenger outside the airport, in particular, to sort flights by various parameters. Also, the passenger will be able to find out the information on the airport scoreboard by his flight number, that the departure was delayed. And his relatives, who are waiting for the arrival, with the help of the flight number can find out the flight information if the plane is delayed.

What does the flight number look like?

There are a lot of numbers on the boarding pass, so the passenger may not immediately find the flight number among them. To make this task easier, airlines make every effort, as this allows the passenger to arrive at the airport on time even in a rush or other stressful situation. If you can't find the flight number on your boarding pass, you can find it on your regular airline ticket. It can also be found on the booking confirmation.

Most airlines put the word "Flight" next to the flight number for convenience. The difficulty of the search is that airlines have not been able to agree on a uniform location of the flight number. That is, in the boarding pass of one air carrier it may be in the upper left corner, while another company places flight numbers in the lower right corner. But the easiest and most effective way to find the flight number is to memorize how the number should look like. It always consists of capital letters (or numbers and letters) at the beginning, followed by 4 or 5 digits.

How do I find out my flight number?

You should ask yourself what your flight number is before you arrive at the airport. Look through your travel documents at home, so that you don't have to search frantically in a hurry for the coveted digits. There are several ways to find out your flight number.

On the boarding pass

This is the obvious source to start your search with. Find the word "Flight" in the ticket (sometimes it can be other words, but with the same meaning, for example, German airlines explicitly state the phrase "flight number" before the desired combination). This will be followed by your flight number.

In the booking confirmation

Nowadays, most airline tickets are booked online, and the booking confirmation that comes to your email also includes your flight number. Besides airlines send out the so-called electronic ticket with a QR code, where the flight number is also indicated.

But sometimes passengers make a mistake, confusing the flight number with the online booking code, or booking number. It is also a combination of letters and numbers that looks like a flight number.

So if you know where to look for the flight number and what it is, there should be no confusion. Look it up in your documents while you are still at home to get rid of the excitement at the airport. But if you have multiple flights to take, especially when traveling long distances, you'll have to change planes and possibly airlines. So the flight numbers will be different as well.

What does the flight number combination mean?

So, if you've already figured out how to find out your flight number and where to find it, and you've discovered the coveted combination in your boarding cabin, booking confirmation, or e-ticket, it's worth figuring out why it looks like this and what the parts of this combination stand for.

The two letters at the beginning of the number are essentially the abbreviation of the airline that operates the flight. For example, if you're flying with Lufthansa, the beginning of the flight number will have the abbreviation LH. But almost always the passenger already knows which airline he uses, so the usefulness of these letters for him is small. The numbers further on are related to the region where you will take off or land.

Finding out the flight number is sometimes necessary when you are already on the airplane. In this case, you still have your booking confirmation and e-ticket. You can also find out the flight number using websites such as Flightstats. You need to enter departure and arrival information so that the site's program will determine the flight number combination with their help. But the right thing to do is to keep documents like your booking confirmation because there are situations when you may need them much later after the flight.

Are the booking number and flight number the same thing?

Traveling is usually associated with a lot of documents. Today, thanks to the development of digital technology, a passenger no longer has to carry a stack of papers to the check-in desk. All the necessary documents can be presented using a smartphone. But in any case, you should keep them in a presentable and self-explanatory form so that you don't have to look for something when time is limited.

Not only the flight number but also the booking number is important for the passenger. Booking numbers are relied upon by airlines as well. But because this number is made up of numbers and letters just like the flight number, passengers have a lot of difficulty in not getting them mixed up.

If a passenger has a flight number, what is the purpose of a reservation number? There is a huge difference between their purpose. While the flight number helps the passenger better navigate the airport, the reservation number is primarily important to the airline. It shows the carrier all the necessary information about the reservation. For example, if a family or a company of several people is traveling by air, i.e. several seats are indicated in one reservation, it will be assigned one number. Or if one passenger is booking a round-trip flight, they will be assigned one reservation number for both the forward and return route. This detail can be extremely important if you encounter any difficulties along the way. In particular, if you will need to use your travel insurance or get compensation from the airline for a canceled flight or connection, a reservation number that confirms the necessary flight details can be an important and even mandatory element for a successful outcome.

But above all, the reservation number is most important to the passenger during check-in at the airport. It shows the staff what services are assigned to you. Also, a mandatory document at the airport is an ID card. Together with your reservation, it will be checked at check-in and you will be issued a boarding pass, which will contain all the most important information about your flight.

Can the flight number change?

So, at the airport, you find out that the flight number has changed. Needless to say, the airport itself is a pretty stressful environment, and such a sudden "discovery" will only add to the excitement. Eventually, the airline may change the flight number. But this only happens if it is canceled. If the flight is delayed, its number remains the same.

If you can't find your ticket number?

Most airlines have their customer support services. If you cannot find your flight number, you can ask for support. You can also solve other issues and situations that arise, such as ticket refunds, purchasing extra baggage, etc. More often than not, customer support is available 24/7, so you can simply find the support number on the airline's website if you need it.
