This summer, searches for "extreme heat" have soared worldwide, showing growing worries about the rising temperatures. For nearly half of those planning holidays, beaches are the preferred way to avoid the heat. This trend shows how changing climate conditions are influencing travel choices, as more people turn to coastal areas to escape unpredictable and persistent weather inland.

The increased interest in beach vacations signals notable changes in travel behavior. As heatwaves grow stronger, travelers encounter both challenges and new opportunities:

  • Heightened competition for accommodations in popular coastal spots
  • The necessity of early booking to secure preferred stays
  • Growing curiosity about less crowded or emerging beach destinations
  • A stronger focus on cooling off while enjoying outdoor activities such as swimming, surfing, and evening coastal walks

Coastal spots worldwide are gaining popularity at a rapid pace this summer. Interest in Brazil’s Saquarema, the "Surf Capital," grew by 170%. Known for its calm shores and cycling paths, Block Island, Rhode Island experienced a close to 160% rise in search interest. European favorites like Spain’s Conil de la Frontera, Italy’s Palermo, France’s Hossegor, and the UK’s Northumberland also drew visitors with their unique coastal appeal and milder summer weather.

Beaches in other areas are seeing a rise in visitor numbers as well. Searches for Japan’s Fukuoka rose 50 percent, boosted by its combination of family-friendly beaches and outdoor activities. Big Bear Lake in California and Port Aransas in Texas have emerged as popular summer retreats, while Portland, Maine remains a favorite for its mix of coastal scenery and historic lighthouses that blend natural charm with cultural appeal.

Changing travel patterns make it clear that smart planning and adaptability are becoming essential. As demand for seaside escapes grows, visitors may encounter packed beaches and are urged to plan accordingly. The trend also highlights how rising temperatures are shaping travel habits, with more people seeking comfort and making climate-aware, sustainable choices when planning their trips.
