Travel Alert: Increased Security Measures at Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport

Travelers passing through Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (GPT) this summer should prepare for heightened security screenings as passenger volumes surge. The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is reporting record numbers nationwide and has already intercepted six firearms at GPT this year.

TSA officers urge passengers to check their bags carefully for prohibited items before arriving at the airport. According to Kim Jackson, TSA Federal Security Director for Mississippi, travelers should ensure firearms, pocketknives, and other forbidden items are not in their carry-on luggage. Items banned from carry-ons can often be placed in checked bags, but anything flammable, corrosive, or explosive is not permitted anywhere on the plane.

In May, TSA officers at GPT intercepted two firearms: a loaded 9 mm Smith & Wesson M&P from a woman traveling to Atlanta and a loaded Ruger 03500 from a man headed to Charlotte. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenge of preventing prohibited items from entering aircraft cabins.

Across Mississippi, TSA has intercepted 25 firearms this year, including 17 at Jackson, six at Gulfport-Biloxi, and one each at Greenville Mid-Delta and Hattiesburg Laurel Regional Airports. The number of firearms detected is increasing, with officers remaining vigilant to prevent potential threats.

Passengers caught with firearms at security checkpoints face severe consequences, including arrest, court summons, and hefty TSA-imposed civil penalties of up to $15,000. Additionally, TSA PreCheck® privileges can be revoked, possibly permanently, for violators.

To ensure a smooth travel experience, travelers should adhere to TSA guidelines:

  1. No firearms in carry-ons: Firearms must be packed unloaded in a locked, hard-sided case within checked baggage and declared to the airline.
  2. Avoid prohibited items: Double-check bags for items like pocketknives and flammable materials using the TSA's "What Can I Bring?" tool.
  3. Prepare for security: Have ID ready, follow the 3-1-1 rule for liquids, and place personal items in carry-ons before the checkpoint.
  4. Seek assistance: Use @AskTSA on Twitter or Facebook Messenger for real-time help, or call the TSA Contact Center.
  5. Enroll in TSA PreCheck: Expedite your screening process by enrolling in TSA PreCheck, which allows for a more streamlined security experience.

As travel numbers rise, adhering to these tips can help ensure a hassle-free journey through GPT and other airports nationwide.
