Benidorm, traditionally known for its sun-soaked beaches and dense high-rise skyline, has been named the 2025 European Green Pioneer of Smart Tourism by the European Commission. This title acknowledges the city’s recent efforts to transform its infrastructure and tourism strategy to align with sustainable and climate-resilient goals. With over 60% of its land now under environmental protection, the resort is prioritising eco-conscious policies without sacrificing its appeal to international visitors.

A coastal city is managing tourism in a very innovative way by using smart urban design, water savings and clean energy use. Its vertical city planning keeps the urban sprawl down and makes public spaces easily accessible. Meanwhile, new smart beach systems monitor occupancy and environmental conditions in real-time, helping to prevent overcrowding. Water reuse technologies have also improved dramatically, with 36% of greywater recycled and distributed for public use.

For travellers, these changes mean a cleaner, more organised, and environmentally responsible destination. Tourists can now use digital tools to plan their beach visits, avoiding busy periods while also contributing to sustainable practices. Walkable streets, cycle routes and access to natural parks like Sierra Helada are not typical beach holiday experiences, making Benidorm a more diverse and liveable destination all year.

Along with green initiatives, the city is tackling its carbon footprint through energy friendly accommodations and solar public buildings that leave an eco-print while being comfortable. Culinary workshops, cultural tours, and eco-friendly excursions give visitors the chance to explore the region’s heritage while supporting sustainable development. For responsible travellers, Benidorm now offers a model of how leisure and sustainability can work hand in hand.

This development signals a wider shift in European travel priorities. The acceptance of Benidorm is not just an accolade — it is evidence that destinations in high tourist flow can implement top innovation and thrive. For holiday makers, this metamorphosis translates into a more concrete, eco-responsible travel experience that does not lose its quality nor access.
