Universal has confirmed that its new UK resort in Bedford will be called Universal United Kingdom Resort. The theme park was approved in 2025, early works have already started on the site, and opening is planned for 2031. It will be Universal’s first theme park in Europe and one of the biggest new visitor attractions planned for the UK.

The project is backed by major public and private investment. Comcast NBCUniversal plans to invest £5 billion in the resort, with another £1 billion expected during the first 10 years of operation. The UK government is also putting £1.3 billion into local infrastructure connected with the development around Bedford.

What the resort is expected to include

The confirmed plans cover:

  • A 662-acre site in Bedford
  • Four resort zones
  • Hotels, restaurants and arrival areas
  • An entertainment complex
  • A convention centre
  • A 500-room hotel
  • A possible free-to-visit Entry Plaza

The Lake Zone is expected to include accommodation, business hotels and entertainment facilities.

The resort could change how people plan theme park holidays in the UK. Instead of travelling to Orlando, Hollywood or Osaka for a Universal park, visitors would have a large-scale option in England. Bedford could also become more useful for family breaks, weekend stays and rail-linked trips, especially if transport upgrades make arrivals easier.

The resort is not expected to open until 2031, so tickets, hotel bookings, final access arrangements and attraction details are still to come. For now, the confirmed name and site works show the project has moved beyond the early planning stage and into a long build-up.
