Travellers passing through Sussex and south London over Christmas and New Year 2025 will face notable changes that directly affect festive mobility. Although engineering work is scheduled when commuter numbers fall, it coincides with a period when leisure travel rises for family gatherings, winter breaks, and airport departures. This overlap places the strongest impact on holidaymakers, making early planning essential for anyone relying on rail connections between 24 December and the first week of January.

Key festive travel changes

Key travel alterations during the festive period include:

  • 24 Dec 2025 onward: wider upgrade works begin across the network
  • 27 Dec 2025 – 4 Jan 2026: South Bermondsey station closed
  • 27 – 31 Dec 2025: no Thameslink trains between London Blackfriars and Bellingham or Sutton
  • 1 – 4 Jan 2026: buses replace trains between London Bridge and Tulse Hill via Peckham Rye and South Bermondsey
  • 4 Jan 2026: buses replace trains between Purley–East Grinstead and Oxted–Uckfield

These service adjustments affect how easily they can move between popular districts during a period shaped by tourism and seasonal visits. Accommodation near South Bermondsey may become harder to reach without transfers, while travellers heading to or from Gatwick Airport could experience unexpected delays if unfamiliar with replacement bus services. Travellers heading back from holidays in early January could face fewer train choices than usual, so adjusting return timing in advance may help avoid bottlenecks.

"With Christmas just around the corner, I would like to urge all our passengers to please check online now and plan ahead for the changes being made to our services during the festive season."
Jenny Saunders, Customer Services Director for Gatwick Express, Southern and Thameslink

What travellers can do to avoid festive travel setbacks

There are a few straightforward steps that can make festive journeys smoother:

  • Allow wider transfer windows for airport journeys and onward travel
  • Travel earlier in the day to avoid delays caused by replacement buses
  • Download offline maps showing local bus stops and interchange points
  • Avoid tight scheduling for museum visits, events, or timed attractions
  • Confirm contactless payment options when moving between buses and trains
  • Plan step free alternatives in advance when travelling with luggage

These scheduled works reshape the experience of festive travel by shifting focus toward preparation rather than spontaneity. Although the changes limit direct travel during the holidays, the upgrades aim to make rail journeys more dependable in the months that follow. For holidaymakers, the key takeaway remains practical: know your alternatives, keep plans flexible, and leave room for delays. Travellers who prepare early are more likely to enjoy winter trips without major interruptions, even while upgrades temporarily change familiar routes.
