San Antonio International Airport has become the first U.S. airport to adopt an artificial intelligence-powered parking system, replacing the traditional ticket-based method with license plate recognition technology. The system, developed by Metropolis Technologies, automates parking entry and payment processes, aiming to streamline the experience for travelers.

The change comes as the airport transitions to a privatized parking management system following a significant increase in traffic. Visitors now use their smartphones to create a profile via a QR code, entering their credit card details. Payments are processed automatically upon exit, eliminating the need for kiosks or manual ticketing. Travelers can also reserve parking spaces in advance through the Metropolis app.

Metropolis Technologies, which acquired SP Plus, a major parking management firm, earlier this year, introduced the technology after securing a contract with the San Antonio City Council. The airport has retained control over parking rates and is offering discounts until December 20. During a soft launch, the new system was well-received, according to Ryan Rocha, the airport’s Chief of Operations.

While the technology promises to simplify parking, Metropolis has faced criticism in other cities. In Nashville, for example, drivers have reported being mistakenly charged for parking they didn’t use, prompting complaints to the Tennessee Attorney General's Office. Despite these concerns, Metropolis envisions expanding its license plate recognition system nationwide to create a seamless parking experience.

This transformation aligns with the airport's efforts to modernize its infrastructure and adapt to increasing passenger volumes. As the system rolls out, travelers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Metropolis app for a smoother parking experience.
