A freight train derailment has significantly disrupted travel on the West Coast Main Line, the major rail route between England and Scotland. The incident occurred on Wednesday night between Carlisle and Oxenholme Lake District, prompting a "do not travel" alert from rail operators.

The derailment has led to the cancellation and delay of numerous services. National Rail Enquiries reported that services in Lancashire and Cumbria have been suspended, and disruption is expected. Passengers are urged to check with their train operators or National Rail Enquiries before traveling

Network Rail's acting North West route strategy director, Kara Wood, expressed apologies to those affected. She assured that specialist repair teams are working swiftly to ensure the railway's safety. However, significant delays and cancellations are anticipated.

Train operators Avanti West Coast and TransPennine Express have advised passengers not to travel on their services between Preston and Scotland. In a message to customers, Avanti West Coast announced the cancellation of services between Oxenholme Lake District and Penrith due to the blocked line from the derailment. They urged passengers not to attempt travel on their routes between Preston and Scotland for the day.

TransPennine Express echoed these concerns, advising customers not to travel north of Preston due to severe disruption. They highlighted the challenges in sourcing alternative road transport and the limited train service available. Passengers traveling between Preston and Glasgow Central or Edinburgh were strongly advised to consider postponing their journeys or seeking alternative travel arrangements.

Ticket holders have been given the option to delay their trips until Friday or to travel with other operators, as the rail network works to restore normal services. This incident underscores the importance of checking travel updates and planning accordingly in the face of unexpected disruptions.
