The latest advancements in baggage handling are set to make air travel more seamless and stress-free, according to a new report released by the International Air Transport Association (IATA). With the implementation of IATA Resolution 753, travelers can now look forward to enhanced tracking of their luggage, promising significant improvements in the handling process from check-in to arrival.

Currently, 44% of airlines globally have fully implemented this resolution, with an additional 41% making progress toward complete adoption. This initiative requires tracking at every stage—acceptance, loading, transferring, and arrival—ensuring that your bags are monitored throughout their journey.

Airports are also stepping up, with 75% now equipped to support this resolution. While optical barcode scanning remains prevalent, employed by 73% of these airports, Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology is gaining favor, particularly in larger airports where it’s employed by 54% to ensure even greater accuracy and efficiency in baggage handling.

Monika Mejstrikova, IATA's Director of Ground Operations, notes the substantial benefits already observed, including a near 60% reduction in baggage mishandling since 2007. "Travelers can have even more confidence that their bags will be at the carousel when they arrive," she assures. This improved tracking capability not only minimizes the inconvenience of mishandled luggage but also speeds up the process of reuniting travelers with their bags should they go astray.

Looking ahead, IATA is also leading a shift towards modern baggage messaging standards, moving from legacy Type B to XML-based systems. This change is poised to enhance the efficiency of data exchange between airlines and reduce mishandling further, starting with a pilot project in 2024.
