Brighton’s public transport is about to get a significant upgrade with the introduction of the new express route 1X, set to launch on July 7, 2024. This exciting development will replace the existing 1A route and promises quicker connections between key locations such as Mile Oak, Brighton Marina, the Town Centre, Royal Sussex County Hospital, Hove, and Portslade.

The 1X route is designed to be the fastest bus service for traversing the city from east to west, mirroring the popular Route 1 but with fewer stops. While Route 1 will continue its frequent service every seven minutes, the new 1X aims to streamline travel with fewer stopovers, ensuring a more efficient journey.

For travelers, this means you can now reach popular destinations like Portslade and Churchill Square or Hove and Royal Sussex County Hospital in just four stops. This makes the 1X not only a convenient option for everyday commutes but also an attractive choice for visitors looking to explore Brighton’s highlights without the hassle of driving and parking.

Operating every 15 minutes throughout the day and running until midnight, the 1X route will be marked by bright pink bus stop poles, making it easy for passengers to spot. This express service promises to reduce travel time significantly, allowing more time to enjoy the city’s attractions.

Ed Wills, Managing Director at Brighton & Hove Buses, shared his excitement: "We’re hugely excited to introduce the 1X to Brighton & Hove this summer. This new express route will serve as a new lifeline to our bustling city and offer residents quicker journey times from A to B."

To enhance the travel experience, Brighton & Hove Buses have invested in 44 new buses, featuring advanced accessibility options. Six of these buses will serve the 1X route daily, equipped with two wheelchair bays, additional space for buggies, and a free accessible taxi service if needed. Other features include next stop audio and visual announcements, dementia-friendly seating and flooring, and an onboard hearing loop system. All drivers have received disability awareness training and are certified as Dementia Friends and 'My Sighted Guides' in partnership with the Alzheimer’s Society and Guide Dogs.
