Tallinn Airport is warning of longer check-in queues between 23 and 25 August as Ironman competitors leave Estonia with hundreds of bicycles. The airport normally handles about five bikes a week during summer, but nearly 800 are expected to be checked in over these three days. Because bicycles cannot be processed through Self Bag Drop, oversized baggage is likely to slow staffed check-in desks.

What to Know for 23–25 August

  • Airport: Tallinn Airport, Estonia
  • Dates affected: 23–25 August 2026
  • Main cause: Ironman participants travelling home with bicycles
  • Expected bicycle volume: Nearly 800 over three days
  • Self Bag Drop airlines: airBaltic, Finnair, Heston, LOT, Lufthansa, Norwegian, SAS, Skystream, SWISS, Turkish Airlines and Valletta Airlines
  • Arrival advice: At least two hours before departure if checked baggage must be handed over at a staffed desk

Passengers using one of the supported airlines can register ordinary checked baggage at Self Bag Drop up to 23 hours before departure, except with Turkish Airlines, where the limit is 10 hours. The service cannot be used by travellers with sports equipment, pushchairs, musical instruments, baggage booked under an adult travelling with an infant, or passengers requiring special assistance, who must use a staffed check-in desk.

The warning matters beyond Ironman competitors because the extra bikes could affect anyone departing Tallinn during the same period. Travellers with cabin baggage only can avoid check-in queues altogether, while eligible passengers with standard hold luggage can use Self Bag Drop before joining security. Those carrying bikes or other special items should build in extra time, as the busiest pressure is expected at staffed counters rather than throughout the terminal.

With nearly 800 bicycles passing through Tallinn Airport in three days, check-in desks are likely to be busiest for people travelling with sports equipment or other oversized baggage. Those flying on 23–25 August should allow extra time and use Self Bag Drop where available. Travellers carrying only hand luggage can skip the check-in desks and head straight to security.
