Greater Anglia is introducing extra train services from Ipswich station to accommodate the large number of people expected to attend Ed Sheeran’s concerts at Portman Road on July 11, 12, and 13. These extra late-night trains will provide more options for attendees traveling home after each show. Even with additional trains, large crowds are anticipated. Travelers should expect busy conditions and possible delays.

Despite the addition of extra train services, crowded platforms and packed carriages are still anticipated due to the large number of passengers. Below is a summary of the final evening departures from Ipswich following the concerts:

  • Final train times range roughly from 11:45 p.m. to 12:50 a.m.
  • Destinations include London Liverpool Street, Colchester, and Norwich
  • Notable stations along the way are Manningtree, Colchester, Marks Tey, Shenfield, Stowmarket, and Diss
  • There will be no post-event travel options to Lowestoft, Felixstowe, Cambridge, or Peterborough
  • Only a small number of connections to Clacton-on-Sea will run on all three nights
  • Services to Harwich Town will operate in very limited capacity on July 11 and 12

Travelers are strongly advised to plan ahead and factor in additional time due to reduced access on certain routes.

While we are running more trains, we are still expecting services to be very busy. We would therefore encourage everyone to check before they travel and allow more time for their journeys.
James Steward, Greater Anglia’s Area Customer Service Manager

The concerts take place at Portman Road, the home stadium of Ipswich Town Football Club, attracting thousands over three nights. This will significantly increase foot traffic around the stadium and nearby transport hubs. Proper planning and control are required to keep crowds safe and traffic flowing efficiently. The sharp increase in passenger traffic may lead to interruptions in local transportation and public transit services. Travelers should expect busy surroundings and plan accordingly.

The extra late-night trains create opportunities for travelers to explore interesting locations along the routes. For those heading to London, stops near Stratford allow visits to the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the bustling Westfield Stratford City shopping centre. Those going to Colchester might explore the historic Castle Park or try waterfront dining at Hythe Quay. On the Norwich line, Diss leads to Redgrave, while Stowmarket offers pubs and parks for a quick stop.

In conclusion, the additional train services will help reduce travel pressure but will not resolve all issues. Travelers should plan carefully, check live updates, and prepare for crowded trains and platforms. Familiarity with service limits and alternate paths can help passengers travel more smoothly. Allowing extra time and remaining adaptable will help ensure smoother travel during this busy weekend. Being informed and prepared is essential for smoother travel.
