Wales Is Turning an 800-Year-Old Castle Into a Major Attraction
Haverfordwest Castle in southwest Wales is being transformed into a major heritage attraction as part of a £17.7 million regeneration project. The medieval stronghold, first recorded in 1188, is currently closed while restoration work continues. When it reopens, visitors will find an interactive discovery centre, a refurbished town museum and an outdoor events space built into the historic castle site.
The redevelopment centres on the former County Gaol, which is being converted into an interactive attraction exploring Pembrokeshire’s history and future. Conservation specialists have repaired castle walls, archaeological excavations have taken place and the inner bailey has been landscaped for events. Haverfordwest Museum is also due to return to the refurbished Grade II-listed Governor’s House as part of the wider project.
