European Travel Destinations Thrive in Early 2024
Europe is experiencing a travel boom at the start of 2024, with several popular destinations drawing significant numbers of international tourists. According to Eurostat, the EU saw a 7% increase in overnight stays during the first quarter compared to the same period last year.
Malta has emerged as a leading destination, with international visitors making up an impressive 91% of its overnight stays. Known for its beautiful beaches and rich history, Malta continues to captivate tourists from around the world.
Cyprus also recorded strong numbers, with 87% of its stays coming from foreign travelers. This Mediterranean island is famed for its sunny weather, crystal-clear waters, and fascinating archaeological sites, making it a top choice for holidaymakers.
Luxembourg and Austria followed closely, with 82% and 78% of their overnight stays, respectively, attributed to international guests. Luxembourg’s charming landscapes and historical landmarks, along with Austria’s stunning alpine scenery and cultural attractions, make these countries highly attractive to visitors.
Overall, foreign tourists accounted for 45% of all overnight stays in the EU in early 2024. This surge highlights the region's recovery from the pandemic and underscores the critical role of international tourism in revitalizing Europe’s travel industry.
