Vrbo has launched a search feature that lets travellers describe their accommodation needs in complete sentences, including preferences that standard filters may struggle to capture. Featured in Expedia Group’s product announcement on 28 October, Natural Language Search uses artificial intelligence to interpret requests covering destinations, facilities and trip occasions. Users can bring several requirements together, from a beachfront location to enough space for a family gathering.

The system considers the overall request when ranking properties, highlights relevant amenities and explains why particular homes appear in the results, with booking available through the same platform. According to Vrbo, early testing found that users combined an average of three concepts per search, such as destination, property type and facilities, frequently describing proximity or the experience they wanted rather than focusing on individual amenities alone.

“Many AI search tools stop at understanding what you typed. We built ours to go further, from understanding the trip and ranking the right homes to booking in one place. By translating travel intent into personalized recommendations, Vrbo is helping planners get from search to vacation faster."
Larry Plawsky, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Vrbo

How Travellers Can Use the Feature and Its Limits

Group holidays are one application, particularly when a property must accommodate different ages and priorities. Someone arranging a family reunion could specify multiple bedrooms, a kitchen for shared meals and outdoor gathering space. Other requests might combine a coastal location with beach access, or a city stay with walking distance to attractions. Descriptions of the occasion and preferred atmosphere can add context alongside these practical requirements.

However, availability is currently restricted to the US English experience on Vrbo’s app and website. Matching also depends partly on the accuracy of listing details, including amenities, sleeping arrangements, locations and house rules. Travellers therefore still need to check essential requirements rather than assume a suggested property meets every condition. The feature operates alongside traditional search, which remains available for users who prefer filters.

The development changes how travellers can begin choosing a holiday rental, especially when several needs must be considered together. Describing a planned stay in one sentence provides another route to a shortlist, while the final decision still rests on comparing individual properties. Its practical value will depend on whether the results reflect the priorities that matter most to the group, from suitable sleeping arrangements to a location that fits the trip.
