TAP’s New Brazil Flight Brings Giant Dunes Closer

TAP Air Portugal has opened a new nonstop link from Lisbon to São Luís, the capital of Brazil’s Maranhão state. The route gives European holidaymakers a simpler way to reach the region’s historic waterfront and extraordinary dune landscapes, without changing planes elsewhere in Brazil. But the return journey takes longer, and the late-night timetable could affect plans beyond the airport.
How TAP’s New São Luís Flights Will Run
- Airline: TAP Air Portugal; Airbus A321LR (171 seats).
- Launch: 26 October 2026; regular service, with no announced end date.
- Lisbon to São Luís: Monday 19:05–00:10 next day; Thursday 19:20–00:30 next day, nonstop.
- São Luís to Fortaleza: Tuesday/Friday, 01:40–03:00.
- Fortaleza to Lisbon: Tuesday/Friday, 04:30–14:50.
- From 30 March 2027: Three weekly Lisbon departures, Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.
- Return fares: From €705 including taxes, subject to availability.
- Times: All times are local.
Although the outbound flight is nonstop, the return makes a scheduled 90-minute stop in Fortaleza for refuelling, linked to runway restrictions at São Luís. It is not an opportunity for a city visit, and passengers should confirm with TAP whether they need to leave the aircraft. Arrivals in São Luís are after midnight; the airport’s official taxi service operates around the clock.
Beyond São Luís’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, the main draw is Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. Barreirinhas, one of the gateways to its dunes and lagoons, is around four hours away by road. Park entry is free, but excursions and authorised transport cost extra, and private cars are not permitted in protected areas. The lagoons are generally fullest between May and September, after the rains.
The new flight removes the need for a domestic connection on the way to Maranhão, but it does not bring the dune fields within easy reach of the airport. Anyone planning a short break should allow time for the road journey and at least one organised park excursion. Travellers starting outside Portugal should also price the full itinerary, rather than just the advertised Lisbon–São Luís return fare.
