A visiting National Gallery painting will give people exploring South Yorkshire a new exhibition to include in their plans. The Cooper Gallery in Barnsley is preparing Mignard: Love, Power, Identity, which will examine how art conveys social position and personal identity. Developed with Barnsley Museums’ youth group, Next Big Thing, the exhibition places a historic French portrait alongside objects from the town’s collections, connecting the loan with local holdings.

The painting’s stay in Barnsley will span late autumn and winter, with a chance to meet the curators on opening day:

  • Venue: Cooper Gallery, Barnsley, South Yorkshire.
  • Exhibition dates: Saturday 14 November 2026 to Saturday 20 February 2027.
  • Admission: Free.
  • Featured painting: Pierre Mignard’s The Marquise de Seignelay, completed in 1691.
  • Tour: Barnsley is one of four UK venues hosting the work.
  • Opening-day curator chat: Free drop-in session, 11am–2pm, in the exhibition space.

What Visitors Can Discover at the Exhibition

The portrait’s details offer visitors a way to understand its subjects beyond their appearance. The Marquise is depicted as the sea goddess Thetis, while her son wears the armour of Achilles. Coral, pearls and shells refer to the family’s maritime connections, including her late husband’s role in the French navy. Her robe, painted with costly ultramarine pigment, demonstrates how materials themselves could help communicate a sitter’s wealth and influence.

Elsewhere in the display, paintings, ceramics and glass from Barnsley’s collections will allow visitors to compare artistic styles and approaches to representation. Families attending the launch can also take part in creative activities, including making seashell badges and peg-doll characters inspired by Greek mythology. These activities provide another way to explore the painting’s imagery, while conversations with gallery staff offer opportunities to ask questions about the works and their background.

"We're incredibly proud to welcome this remarkable work from the National Gallery to Barnsley. Opportunities like this allow us to bring internationally important art to local audiences and reinforce Barnsley's reputation as a place where culture is accessible to everyone."
Councillor Sam Burdett, Cabinet Spokesperson for Communities

The exhibition gives people considering a Barnsley stop a defined cultural event to build into a wider regional visit. Seeing a touring painting alongside locally held objects can make a short gallery visit more revealing, offering both an introduction to the artist and a sense of the host town’s collections. Its seasonal run also creates a reason to plan ahead for those whose main interest is seeing this particular loan.
