The Indonesian government is implementing policies to establish Bali as a model for quality tourism. These initiatives, highlighted at the recent conference, are focused on promoting sustainable tourism development. The proposed actions involve stopping the transformation of farmland into commercial developments and imposing a halt on constructing tourism facilities that do not meet sustainability standards. The aim is to reshape Bali into a culturally rich, welcoming, and sustainable destination, ultimately enhancing the well-being of local communities and creating high-quality job opportunities.

A recent report detailing approaches to advancing quality tourism in five key regions of Indonesia was unveiled at the conference. The report emphasizes the necessity for a strong legal framework to address issues such as overtourism, waste management, and the unlawful employment of overseas citizens.

Beginning 2025 year, a $10 fee will be imposed on tourists visiting Bali - a step intended to support the preservation of the island's culture and environment. This charge will be applicable to international tourists, regardless of whether they come from abroad or other regions within Indonesia. The charge will not apply to Indonesian nationals traveling domestically. The fee will be collected digitally and is intended to regulate the impact of the millions of visitors Bali receives annually.

Authorities believe the new charge will not deter visitors, emphasizing its potential advantages for the island. The gathered funds will be utilized to bolster environmental conservation efforts, preserve cultural heritage, and upgrade infrastructure to improve the visitor experience. This initiative is part of a larger strategy to balance tourism expansion with sustainable practices, ensuring Bali remains an appealing destination that protects its cultural and natural assets.

With these policies, the Indonesian government aims to reduce the negative impacts of mass tourism and encourage more responsible travel. These initiatives strive to safeguard Bali's unique cultural and environmental resources while also setting an example for other tourist destinations. The objective is to develop a more sustainable and high-quality tourism experience that provides benefits to both travelers and the local population, supporting lasting economic development and cultural vibrancy.
