Granada has been hit by another series of earthquakes, disrupting visits to the Alhambra and damaging buildings across the southern Spanish province. Three people suffered minor injuries after the 18 August tremors, including a child who was taken to hospital. The strongest quake measured magnitude 4.7 and struck near Gójar, about 10 kilometres south of Granada, three days after a magnitude 5 earthquake affected the city.

Current Restrictions in Granada

  • Latest major tremors: 18 August 2026
  • Strongest: Magnitude 4.7
  • Epicentre: Gójar, around 10 km south of Granada
  • Injuries: Three minor injuries
  • Alhambra: Partial visitor restrictions remain
  • Alcazaba: Temporarily closed
  • Nasrid Palaces: Open on a special route
  • Generalife: Open on its usual route

The tremors prompted precautionary closures across Granada, including museums, sports facilities and some public buildings, while health centres remained open. Metro trains temporarily reduced their speed to 30 km/h, and several hotels were evacuated. At the Alhambra, visitor routes were interrupted while technical teams inspected the complex. Current official guidance keeps the Alcazaba closed, with modified access through the Nasrid Palaces and parts of the Partal.

Granada remains open to visitors, although some attractions are operating with restrictions. The Generalife is following its normal visitor route, and most of the Partal remains accessible except for the Paseo de las Torres. Visitors can also explore the Albaicín and spend time around Granada’s old town. Anyone with an Alhambra ticket should check updates from the Patronato de la Alhambra y Generalife before visiting, as access may change after safety inspections.

Granada is not closed to tourists, but the earthquakes have made some plans less predictable. Alhambra access is the main point to check, because individual sections may reopen or close after inspections. Visitors should also pay attention to local transport and building closures, especially after new tremors. A trip is still possible, but it now needs a little more day-by-day planning than usual.
