Lufthansa Calms Summer Fuel Fears

Lufthansa Group says it does not expect a jet fuel shortage to disrupt its summer schedule this year. The airline group says suppliers see no fuel-risk signs at its six European hubs: Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels and Rome. The same assessment applies to operations abroad, according to Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of Lufthansa Group, as peak holiday demand builds.

Vranckx said the assessment was not based on hope alone. Just under a quarter of jet fuel shipments bound for Europe passes through the Strait of Hormuz. Lufthansa Group says possible gaps are being covered by more imports from other continents, including North America and Africa, while European refineries have lifted jet fuel production to maximum capacity ahead of the summer peak.

The group says customers can continue booking summer flights across its network, which covers more than 300 destinations in over 100 countries. If unexpected fuel problems still led to cancellations, affected customers would be offered rebooking or a full refund. Lufthansa Group says the same rules apply across all airlines in the group, including its main European carriers, without additional restrictions.

A steady summer schedule would keep city breaks and long-haul trips easier to plan through Lufthansa Group hubs. Connections can support holidays to southern European cities such as Seville, transatlantic journeys to Los Angeles, and onward trips through Frankfurt, Munich, Zurich, Vienna, Brussels or Rome. It also keeps family visits and business travel less exposed to fuel-related timetable changes.

“Our airlines are ready for summer, our network is strong — our customers can rely on us."
Dieter Vranckx, Chief Commercial Officer of the Lufthansa Group

This is still not a guarantee that every summer flight will operate exactly as planned. Weather, air traffic control, aircraft availability and security issues can still affect schedules. The useful point is narrower: no fuel-driven capacity problem is currently being flagged, so travellers can treat fuel as one less obvious risk when choosing dates and routes.
