Flooding Disrupts Train Services North of Preston

Train services in Lancashire and Cumbria have been halted due to severe flooding. The disruption affects the West Coast Main Line north of Preston, with significant impacts also seen on the Cumbrian coast. Network Rail has deployed engineers to restore safety and service as quickly as possible.

The suspension of train services has led to cancellations and delays, with disruptions expected to last throughout the day and possibly into the weekend. Trains are being diverted where feasible, but passengers are advised to expect significant travel interruptions.

Kara Wood, Network Rail’s acting North West route strategy director, expressed regret for the inconvenience caused to passengers. She highlighted the challenges faced by repair teams due to adverse conditions, which complicate both access and repair efforts. Wood emphasized the importance of checking travel plans and advised passengers to verify their schedules with train operators or National Rail Enquiries before traveling.

In response to the frequent flooding issues, Network Rail is investing £2 million in new drainage systems in Carlisle and Shap, Cumbria. This project aims to enhance the railway's resilience against extreme weather, ensuring more reliable service in the face of climate change.

Passengers traveling in Lancashire and Cumbria are encouraged to stay updated through National Rail Enquiries and the Avanti West Coast websites. Those experiencing delays of 15 minutes or more can claim Delay Repay compensation, and tickets for canceled trains will be valid on the preceding or following services.
