‘Endless’ Cruise Forces 203 Ashore in Cambodia
Residents aboard the Villa Vie Odyssey were ordered off their cruise ship in Sihanoukville, Cambodia, on 27 October after its operator suspended a long-running world voyage. Cambodian officials said 203 passengers and 156 crew had arrived aboard. Many residents had bought or rented cabins as homes, leaving them to find somewhere to stay ashore with no confirmed date for returning to the vessel.
The ship reached Sihanoukville on 23 October, with Vietnam expected next. Residents were told to disembark by 2pm on 27 October while essential crew stayed aboard. A notice said the operator could not secure enough fuel to keep sailing. The captain later said a generator and cooling equipment would need to be shut down. Some residents flew out; others sought accommodation locally.
The voyage began in Belfast, Northern Ireland, in October 2024 after months of delays. Those aboard represented 15 nationalities, including 159 Americans; Canadians and five Australians were also among the passengers. Villa Vie said monthly fuel expenses per cabin-equivalent had climbed from roughly $1,800 to 6,000–8,000 in parts of Asia. It is seeking fresh funding over 60 days but has not guaranteed a restart.
If Your Cruise Is Suddenly Suspended
- Take your passport, medication and valuables when leaving the ship.
- Ask the operator what it will cover, including hotels, transport and refunds. Get the answers in writing.
- Keep your booking documents, messages and receipts for unexpected expenses.
- Ask your insurer about cover and whether package-travel protection or a card dispute applies.
- Check your visa expiry and options for getting home.
- Contact your embassy if you're stranded without assistance.
Residents face more than a missed port call: some have belongings still aboard and ongoing accommodation costs on land. Those affected should secure written answers about housing, onward travel and what will happen to payments already made. Anyone considering a residential cruise should examine the contract’s insolvency and accommodation provisions before committing savings. A proposed restructuring is not a sailing date or a refund guarantee.
