Miches in the Dominican Republic opens up as a new nature escape

Hyatt Hotels Corporation has recently opened Secrets Playa Esmeralda Resort and Spa, an adults-only, all-inclusive property located along the largely undeveloped coastline of Playa Esmeralda in the Miches region of the Dominican Republic. This part of the country is still relatively undiscovered, with natural landscapes and a low level of tourism infrastructure. The launch highlights rising attention toward Miches as a quieter option compared to more established destinations on the island.
Miches is located northeast of popular resort areas like Punta Cana and La Romana. The area is recognized for the following features:
- Tropical rainforests and wetlands
- Untouched, pristine beaches
- Lower tourist density compared to major resorts
- Growing interest from travelers seeking natural and less crowded destinations
- Infrastructure that is gradually developing to support tourism

Several natural landmarks are accessible to visitors in the surrounding area. Visitors to Montaña Redonda can enjoy wide-ranging views of the forest and coast, with swings and observation areas available. Visitors can enjoy kayaking and birdwatching at Laguna Limón, a freshwater lagoon bordered by mangroves. Cayo Levantado, a small offshore island, provides quiet beaches and coral reefs ideal for swimming and snorkeling excursions.
Additional attractions include Salto La Jalda, one of the highest waterfalls in the Caribbean, reachable via a hiking trail through tropical forest. Los Haitises National Park offers boat tours through mangrove channels and limestone caves that feature pre-Columbian rock art. North of Miches, Playa Arriba remains largely undeveloped and is appreciated for its gentle waters and low visitor traffic.

The introduction of a major resort in this relatively untouched area reflects a shift in tourism toward less commercialized destinations within the Dominican Republic. This development offers travelers more choices to enjoy both classic beach relaxation and nearby natural attractions. As Miches develops further, it could attract more travelers seeking peaceful and nature-focused vacations.
