Sofia’s Flight Map Expands as Wizz Air Prepares for a Bigger Summer 2026

Wizz Air has announced a new phase of expansion in Bulgaria, confirming that an eighth aircraft will be based in Sofia and that several new direct services will launch from the capital in the summer of 2026. The move significantly increases operational capacity and strengthens Sofia’s role within the airline’s Central and Eastern European network. Flights under the expanded programme are scheduled to begin in early July 2026, with tickets already available for booking.
Alongside the new services, the airline will also increase flight frequencies on ten existing routes from Sofia. The adjustment brings more departure options at a time when travel demand is highest across the network. With the additional aircraft in place, Wizz Air is preparing for a substantial increase in available seats from Sofia ahead of summer 2026.
A Busier Summer Ahead for Sofia Airport
The newly introduced routes open direct access to several distinct travel experiences. Budapest offers riverside walks along the Danube, thermal baths and a compact historic centre ideal for short visits. Palermo provides entry to Sicily’s street markets, Norman architecture and nearby Mediterranean beaches, while Rhodes combines medieval fortifications with well known island resorts. New links to Hurghada and Sharm el Sheikh also make Red Sea coral reefs, diving sites and year round resort stays reachable directly from Sofia.
Routes with increased frequencies further improve access to established European favourites. More frequent flights to Rome make it easier to plan visits around major landmarks such as the Colosseum and Vatican, even on shorter trips. Additional services to Prague simplify access to its Old Town and castle district, while higher frequencies to Madrid and Malaga support both cultural sightseeing and coastal holidays with more flexible travel dates.
This expansion means fewer limits when choosing when and where to travel from Sofia. The addition of new destinations broadens travel choices, while more frequent flights make it easier to plan trips without being constrained by limited departure days. Taken together, these updates turn Sofia into a more practical departure point for short city visits, cultural travel and beach focused holidays, allowing travellers to plan trips around their own schedules.
