Iberia has introduced stricter baggage rules aimed at passengers travelling with irregularly shaped luggage, expanding checks at airport special baggage counters. The policy applies to items that do not match the form of a standard suitcase, including certain soft bags and non-rigid packaging. The airline says such items can disrupt automated baggage systems and require additional manual handling during airport operations.

Under the new rules, extra charges may apply when luggage is assessed as non-standard. Fines can reach up to £125 for passengers connecting onto long-haul services to destinations in Asia or the Americas. Short-haul travellers, including many flying between the UK and Europe, are more likely to face charges closer to £55, depending on routing and handling requirements.

What counts as irregular baggage

According to Iberia, items may be flagged if they create operational or security concerns, including:

  • Soft or loosely packed bags
  • Round or oval-shaped luggage
  • Plastic-wrapped or non-rigid items

In some cases, baggage may be refused or placed on a later flight if it cannot be processed safely within standard systems.

The new rules are likely to affect how some people plan their trips, especially those travelling to major cities or connecting onto long-haul leisure flights through Madrid. Passengers carrying sports equipment, bulky items or soft, flexible bags may need to think more carefully about what they pack and how their luggage is shaped. Destinations served by Iberia’s long-haul network, including cities across the Americas and Asia, could see smoother baggage flows as fewer irregular items enter automated handling systems.

The move highlights how closely airlines are managing ground operations as airports handle rising volumes. Clear rules around baggage shape, not just weight, are becoming part of everyday travel planning. For passengers, careful packing now carries more financial weight, especially on connecting itineraries. The update also reinforces the value of checking airline-specific baggage policies well before arriving at the airport.
