Shannon Airport is warning passengers to allow extra time for journeys this weekend as traffic volumes rise during US President Donald Trump’s visit to Ireland. The advice applies between 11am on Friday, 11 September, and 11am on Monday, 14 September. Anyone entering the airport during that period must carry valid photo identification, while departing passengers should also have their flight documents ready for inspection.

What to Check Before Heading to Shannon

  • Timing: The advice applies from 11am on Friday, 11 September, until 11am on Monday, 14 September.
  • Allow extra time to reach the terminal.
  • Check your airline’s latest flight status before leaving.
  • Carry valid photo ID, even if you are only visiting the airport.
  • Keep your boarding pass or other flight documents easy to reach.
  • Check Garda traffic updates if travelling through Doonbeg or west Clare, where restrictions are expected around the N67.

Shannon Airport has not specified how much additional journey time passengers should allow, so anyone travelling during the warning period will need to build their own buffer around traffic conditions and normal airline check-in deadlines. The alert concerns access to the airport and additional checks rather than a general flight cancellation programme. Travellers should therefore rely on their airline for any changes affecting individual services.

The warning comes as west Clare prepares for both Trump’s visit and the Amgen Irish Open at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg. Gardaí have warned of heavier traffic and restrictions around Doonbeg and parts of the N67 during the tournament. The Irish Aviation Authority has also issued temporary flight restrictions around Shannon and Doonbeg as part of the security arrangements, although no blanket disruption to scheduled passenger flights has been announced.

Anyone flying through Shannon between Friday and Monday should treat the road journey as the main uncertainty, particularly when approaching from west Clare. Leaving extra time, keeping identification and booking documents accessible and checking live updates before setting off should reduce the risk of a rushed arrival. There is currently no reason to change confirmed travel plans unless an airline issues its own disruption notice.
