Finnair Clarifies Rules for Flying With Babies Under Two

Finnair has published detailed guidance explaining how infants under the age of two can travel on its flights, covering tickets, baggage and onboard arrangements. Babies can usually travel on an adult’s lap at around 10% of the standard fare, provided they have a valid passport. A separate seat may also be purchased using a child fare if parents prefer to use an approved child restraint device during the journey.
Infants travelling without their own seat typically do not receive a standard cabin baggage allowance. Checked baggage depends on the fare type linked to the adult ticket, although foldable pushchairs and child car seats are generally accepted without additional cost. These items can usually be handed over at the boarding gate, allowing families to use them in the airport before departure where permitted.
What parents should prepare before flying
- Infants on laps do not receive onboard meals
- Baby food and milk can be taken through security
- Crew may warm food using hot water
- Bassinets available on selected long-haul flights
- Breast pumps permitted in cabin baggage
Parents need to bring baby food for the flight because infants travelling on an adult’s lap do not receive meals. Milk and baby food can pass through security in the amounts needed for the journey, but there is limited space on board to store them. Baby bassinets are offered on some long-haul flights if the baby meets size and weight limits. Breast pumps can be taken on board, but there is no private place to use them during the flight.
These rules help parents understand what is available during the trip and what needs to be prepared in advance. Knowing the baggage conditions, seating options and onboard limitations helps avoid problems at the airport or during the flight. Clear expectations make travelling with a baby easier to plan, especially on longer international journeys.
