Dubai’s Burj Al Arab hotel is set to close for 18 months as part of a restoration programme focusing on preserving its distinctive interiors. Opened in 1999, the sail-shaped building has become one of the most recognisable landmarks in the city. The project will involve updating interior elements while maintaining the original design details that contributed to the hotel’s reputation for highly elaborate decorative features.

The 198-suite property, operated by Jumeirah, is known for its extensive use of materials such as Statuario marble, Swarovski crystals and gold leaf. According to the company, the refurbishment will be led by interior architect Tristan Auer, whose previous work includes Hôtel de Crillon and Les Bains Douches in Paris. The restoration aims to protect the design heritage of the hotel while preparing the building for continued long-term operation.

The announcement follows an incident on 1 March when debris linked to the interception of an Iranian drone caused limited exterior damage and a small fire on part of the facade, according to the Dubai Media Office. Jumeirah states that the restoration programme will continue the building’s legacy as one of the best-known luxury hotels in the region, maintaining the architectural identity that has defined the property since its opening.

What Makes the Burj Al Arab Notable

  • Sail-shaped design visible across Dubai’s coastline
  • Interiors featuring Swarovski crystals and gold leaf
  • Suites with dedicated butler service
  • Dining venues including Michelin-starred restaurants
  • Helipad used for high-profile sporting events and stunts

The Burj Al Arab is frequently included in travel plans focused on well-known architecture and restaurants overlooking the Arabian Gulf. During the closure period, visitors planning to stay in well-known luxury hotels or dine in landmark locations may look at other options in Dubai with similar views or settings. Despite the closure, the building remains part of the city’s skyline and continues to be recognised as one of its most distinctive landmarks.

“Jumeirah Burj Al Arab is far more than an architectural landmark; it is a symbol of ambition, craftsmanship and enduring excellence."
Thomas B. Meier, Jumeirah’s CEO

The Burj Al Arab has been open since 1999, and the upcoming works are intended to refresh the interiors while keeping the original design details. The project shows how landmark hotels are maintained over time so they can continue operating for many years. After the renovation, the building is expected to remain one of the most recognisable parts of Dubai’s skyline.
