West Wales Trips Face Three Rail Shutdowns in November
A train trip to the Welsh coast could come with an unexpected change of transport this November. Network Rail is planning a series of engineering closures across west Wales, meaning some journeys will involve buses rather than trains. The work should improve track reliability, but passengers may face longer journeys and unfamiliar boarding points. Those heading for coastal resorts or ferry connections could find the disruption particularly awkward.
When Trains Stop and What to Do
- 1 November: 00:01–2 November 01:45; buses west of Carmarthen.
- 6–14 November: Whitland–Pembroke closed 23:30 Friday to 05:45 Saturday; buses Carmarthen–Pembroke Dock on 7–13 November.
- 8 November: Additional Swansea–Carmarthen replacement buses.
- 15 November: 00:01–16 November 01:45; buses west of Carmarthen.
- Destinations: Tenby, Pembroke Dock; also Milford Haven and Fishguard Harbour on both Sundays.
- Check: TfW's planned engineering works.
- Assistance: 03330 050 501.
On 8 November, an additional closure between Swansea and Carmarthen means passengers travelling towards Tenby or Pembroke Dock may need two replacement buses. During the week-long closure, buses run between Carmarthen and Pembroke Dock, while the Sunday closures also affect Milford Haven and Fishguard Harbour. Network Rail is replacing track around Tenby and junction equipment at Whitland; journey times will differ from the normal train timetable.
Bus boarding points are not always at the station entrance. At Tenby, the stop is at the car park entrance off Upper Park Road; at Pembroke Dock, it is behind the station. You'll need a valid rail ticket, and non-folding bikes cannot go on replacement coaches. Passengers needing accessible transport can request a suitable alternative through TfW Passenger Assist, without paying extra.
A slower planned replacement bus does not automatically qualify for compensation. Under TfW's Delay Repay rules, delays of 15 minutes or more are measured against the replacement timetable; claims must be made within 28 days. If a train is cancelled or rescheduled after purchase and you decide not to travel, request a fee-free refund from the ticket retailer. Check ferry departures before choosing a bus connection.
