Travellers attending Sam Fender’s two-night concert at St James’ Park in Newcastle this weekend will benefit from temporary evening train services linking the city with Darlington. TransPennine Express confirmed that an extra train will depart Newcastle at 10.47pm on both Saturday and Sunday, stopping at Durham before reaching Darlington by 11.17pm.

This late service is being introduced to accommodate the surge of passengers following the concerts, which are expected to draw tens of thousands each night. Without this added option, most rail connections southbound would have ended before the show finishes. This route is being added to take some of the load off the train network after the concert and to help make sure people do not end up stuck in Newcastle with no way home.

The concerts mark a major cultural moment for Newcastle, with Sam Fender performing in his hometown at one of the country’s largest stadiums. Each night is expected to attract over 50,000 people. Gates will open early in the evening, with the main set ending around 10.30pm. Large crowds will move toward Newcastle Central Station immediately after, so passengers should plan their journey in advance, avoid last-minute transfers, and expect longer wait times near the station.

For visitors arriving from nearby cities such as York or Leeds, this additional service provides a rare opportunity to return home the same night without booking accommodation. The train stops only in Durham and Darlington, but these hubs offer onward connections that extend travel possibilities. This arrangement is particularly valuable for those relying exclusively on rail, especially during late hours when other transport is limited.

It’s really important we help our customers head home from concerts so they can enjoy Newcastle’s music scene to the full. We’re reminding our customers to plan ahead and of course enjoy watching Sam Fender play.
Andrew McClements, Customer Experience & Transformation Director at TransPennine Express

Although this measure is temporary, it points to a wider need for flexible transport solutions that reflect the scale of public events. For those who plan trips around live music or cultural gatherings, knowing that train operators are willing to adjust services adds reassurance. Even short-term changes like this can significantly reduce post-event stress for thousands of travellers.
