Residents of Greater Vancouver found themselves at the center of a natural disaster as a deluge caused by an "atmospheric river" brought traffic to a standstill. Torrential downpours flooded key highways, creating significant challenges for both drivers and pedestrians.

Beginning on Friday, the rain gradually intensified, and by Saturday morning, many parts of the city were underwater. Storm drainage systems were overwhelmed, turning streets into rivers and cutting off transportation.

The situation was especially dire in Burnaby, where several drivers on Still Creek Drive and Willingdon found themselves trapped in waist-high water. Emergency services quickly arrived on the scene to rescue motorists who had attempted to cross the flooded areas.

Natural Conditions and Aftermath

This storm became the first major test for the city’s infrastructure this season. The intense rainfall not only caused traffic delays but also posed a threat to homes and businesses. Areas with older drainage systems were especially hard-hit.

Local authorities urge residents to avoid driving until conditions improve. It’s important to remember that even relatively shallow flooding can pose a serious threat to vehicles and their drivers.

For travelers currently in the region or planning a visit in the coming days, it is essential to closely monitor weather forecasts and changes in the transportation system. Bus routes and rail lines may be temporarily closed, and flight schedules could be disrupted. It’s recommended to check for potential delays and cancellations before traveling.
