The Netherlands has introduced a temporary summer rail subscription designed to make nationwide train trips cheaper during quieter travel periods. The offer, run by national rail operator NS with other Dutch train companies, gives visitors a simpler way to plan multi-city stays without buying separate tickets for every journey. It is best suited to travellers who can avoid rush-hour trains.

Key Details for the Dutch Summer Rail Pass

  • Pass: NS Nederland Dal Vrij summer subscription.
  • Price: €49 per month instead of €127.95.
  • Booking window: 15 June–31 July 2026.
  • Best value: order before 1 July for two discounted months.
  • Off-peak weekdays: 09:00–16:00 and 18:30–06:30.
  • Weekends: Friday 18:30–Monday 04:00.
  • Required: personal OV-chipkaart.
  • Exclusions: Eurostar, Nightjet, ICE Frankfurt and ICE Berlin.

The offer is useful for visitors planning more than a quick Amsterdam stop, but it is not a standard tourist pass. It is a discounted version of the Nederland Dal Vrij subscription, valid on Dutch train services during off-peak hours. The promotional price only applies for the summer offer, and the subscription must be cancelled if travellers do not want it to continue at the regular monthly rate.

The key rule is check-in time. A journey is covered only if the passenger checks in during the valid off-peak window, so timing matters when travelling close to rush hour. Buses, trams, metro journeys and OV-fiets bike hire are charged separately. Eurostar, Nightjet and ICE trains to Frankfurt or Berlin are also excluded, so cross-border trips need separate tickets.

Used carefully, the pass can turn one Dutch city break into a wider rail itinerary. Utrecht, The Hague, Haarlem, Leiden, Rotterdam and Groningen become easy day-trip choices, while Maastricht, Middelburg and Den Helder work better for longer stays. It suits visitors who can travel outside peak hours and want to see more of the Netherlands without buying a new train ticket each day.
