A beach in southern Spain is testing a paid "smart shower" system that could change one of the small habits of a summer holiday: rinsing off after the sea. The pilot has been installed at Matalascañas, in Almonte, Huelva, and is designed to measure water use on a busy stretch of the Andalusian coast.

How the Shower Test Works

  • Location: Matalascañas beach, Almonte, Huelva
  • Region: Andalusia, southern Spain
  • Status: free during the trial period
  • Payment method planned: QR code or coins
  • Reported fee: up to about €1 for a short session
  • Main aim: reduce unnecessary water use
  • Check before visiting: beach signs, payment rules and whether the trial has changed

The shower has been placed near the access point by Hotel ON, according to Spanish media. It was developed with the involvement of Almonte Council, the hotel and local engineers. Users are expected to activate the water through a mobile QR payment system or by inserting coins, although signs on the machine warn that no change is given.

The idea has already split opinion in Matalascañas. Supporters argue that charging for water may stop people using beach showers for too long, especially during the busiest summer weeks. Critics see it as an unnecessary extra cost for a basic beach facility. Reports also say it is currently the only working shower along a long stretch of sand.

Matalascañas is one of the main beach resorts on the Costa de la Luz, so the shower test could be noticed by holidaymakers staying in the area. The resort sits close to Doñana National Park, the Torre de la Higuera area and Dunas de Doñana Golf Course. Anyone planning a full beach day should check shower signs and carry small change.

This is a small change, but it touches something very ordinary: the end of a beach day. If the test stays in place or spreads, visitors may need to treat showers like parking or sunbeds, not as automatic freebies. It will not ruin a holiday, obviously, but nobody enjoys discovering a payment machine while covered in sand.
