Thunderstorms disrupted UK air travel after days of extreme heat, forcing air traffic restrictions and leaving holidaymakers facing late departures, cancellations and missed connections. Heathrow and Gatwick were worst hit, with disruption also reported at Edinburgh, London City and Leeds Bradford. Airlines told passengers to check flight status before leaving for the airport, as knock-on delays continued through Saturday.

How the UK Airport Disruption Unfolded

  • Airports affected: Heathrow, Gatwick, Edinburgh, London City and Leeds Bradford.
  • Main cause: thunderstorms and air traffic control restrictions.
  • Reported impact: 1,019 delayed flights and 160 cancellations.
  • Worst affected airports: Heathrow and Gatwick.
  • Airline advice: passengers were told to check flight updates before travelling.
  • If affected: keep airline messages and receipts for meals, hotels or transport.

Flight tracking data cited in UK reports put Saturday’s disruption at 1,019 delays and 160 cancellations. Heathrow had 440 delayed flights and 103 cancellations, while Gatwick recorded 425 delays and 46 cancellations. London City, Edinburgh and Leeds Bradford also saw smaller numbers of disrupted departures and arrivals. British Airways said schedule changes were linked to air traffic control restrictions during adverse weather.

Heathrow and Gatwick handle a heavy mix of long-haul, European city-break and summer holiday flights, so delays there can spread across wider itineraries. Anyone connecting through London should allow more time, especially with separate tickets. Domestic travellers between London, Scotland and northern England may want to compare rail options before rebooking short flights, if same-day seats are limited.

Weather disruption rarely ends when the storm passes. Aircraft, crews and airport slots can be out of position for hours, sometimes into the next morning. Affected passengers should check the latest airline update before travelling, keep written delay or cancellation notices, and save receipts for meals, hotels or extra transport in case they need to claim costs back later.
