Greece is working hard on improving their cycling tourism via an inter-ministerial strategic partnership of relevant ministries / organizations. In a move that comes alongside MEXT, the Ministry of Environment and Energy/Tourism/ the Central Union of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE) and the nonprofit Cities for Cycling and The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport regionalized cooperation agreement. The goal is to move cycling up the agenda for tourism in Greece: infrastructure and incorporating EuroVelo routes within National tourism routes. All of which are part of a larger push for sustainability that makes Greece an ideal eco-travel destination.

Key elements of the agreement focus on expanding the EuroVelo network, enhancing cycling-friendly infrastructure, and creating new links between rural and urban areas. By integrating these routes into the country’s broader tourism and mobility strategies, Greece aims to promote sustainable travel while driving economic growth. Given that cycling tourism generates billions of euros across Europe, Greece is well-positioned to benefit from its diverse landscapes and cultural heritage, making the country an attractive destination for cycling enthusiasts.

For travelers, these developments translate into improved cycling experiences and increased accessibility to well-maintained bike routes. The expanded EuroVelo pathways will allow visitors to explore Greece in a more immersive and sustainable way, connecting them with coastal regions, historic sites, and picturesque countryside landscapes. With dedicated infrastructure enhancements, cyclists of all skill levels can expect safer, more enjoyable travel options tailored to their needs.

Also urban cycling infrastructure is developing in line with the world moving towards sustainable tourism. Visitors seeking active travel will be well catered for on well-connected systems that inspire and enable exploration beyond traditional tourism destinations. Yet bike-friendly accommodations and rental affordances along with guided cycling tours will add new values to the travel to enable tourists to incorporate cycling in their trip for free. Further, a larger investment in local transport networks enabling on-bike travel with other modes will make bike tourism more malleable to itinerary-making.

Beyond its direct benefits for tourism, this initiative reinforces Greece’s commitment to environmental sustainability. By promoting cycling as an alternative to motorized transport, the country is reducing emissions and alleviating congestion in popular destinations. For travelers, this shift means a cleaner, greener experience, where they can enjoy Greece’s natural and cultural wonders while minimizing their ecological footprint. With these advancements, Greece is positioning itself as a leading destination for responsible, adventure-driven tourism.
