Bremen Airport is preparing to roll out a self-service bag drop option in 2026, giving passengers the chance to handle luggage check-in independently after completing online check-in. The new service will allow travellers to label their bags and hand them over at automated kiosks in the terminal. Staff will be on hand to help anyone using the service for the first time or running into problems, so personal assistance remains part of the process.

The self-service bag drop is expected to launch next year, with Lufthansa passengers set to be the first to use the system. According to airport management, the initial phase will involve a limited number of participating airlines. Self-service bag drop units will be placed directly within the check-in area. Airlines that decide to take part will use the same layout and equipment, making the process easier to understand for passengers.

The new setup is meant to simplify luggage handling, while keeping personal help within easy reach whenever it is needed. Bremen Airport has stressed that the new option is intended to simplify existing procedures rather than replace staff, keeping personal support available throughout the check-in area.

The change is aimed at cutting queues and making the departure routine more straightforward, especially at busy times of day. Travellers who complete online check-in in advance are likely to notice the difference first, as bags can be handed over without stopping at staffed desks. It also suits those who prefer to move through the airport at their own pace, dealing with each step when it suits them rather than following a fixed counter process.

The introduction of self-service bag drop reflects practical changes already taking place at many regional airports. Automated steps are increasingly used to handle rising passenger numbers while keeping operating costs in check. At Bremen Airport, the focus is on cutting time spent on routine procedures, so travellers can move through the terminal with fewer stops and shorter waits.
